4K - The Building Blocks for Future Learning
Welcome Message
Welcome to Fontana's 4K! The program is run by Mrs. Nelson and Ms. Thompson and both love working with 4 year olds! This is where we will be posting our weekly newsletters, photos of what we're doing in the classroom and a few announcements here and there.

The Details:
  • 4K takes place from 8:20am - 11:20am Monday through Friday.
  • Busing is available based on location - please contact us if you would like more information on our transportation services.
  • Afternoon childcare is available on site for 4K children - let us know if you would like more information!
  • We believe in hands on, play based learning that encourages children to question and explore on their own or with friends.

Our Daily Schedule:
  • Meet outside the library for drop off
  • Group learning & calendar time, this is where we introduce our letter of the week, number of the week, shape of the week, and learn beginning math skills through our daily weather graphing.
  • Center and small group time: during small group time we may do activities to expand on a topic discussed during calendar, work on science activities or help your child work on individual skills as needed.
  • Specials or group projects
  • Snack
  • Recess
  • Pick-up

Specials Include: Gym on Tuesdays & Thursdays, and Library on Fridays.
Other special activities include: Science on Wednesdays and Show & Tell on Fridays.

Field trips and Volunteering: We go on field trips both big and small. If you or a family member would like to chaperone one of our field trips you will need to fill out a volunteer application and pass a background check. Please let us know if you would like an application. If you or a family member would like to help plan parties, read with our students or just come in and help we would love to have you. You will need to have a volunteer application on file with us prior to helping and can sign up one of two ways. The first way is to return paper RSVP forms that get sent home in your child's folder. The second way is by signing up through signup.com here.

Our Classroom: More photos coming soon!

Meet the Teachers!

Mrs. Nelson: I teach 4K and Preschool here at Fontana and love it! I graduated from UW-Whitewater with a degree in Early Childhood/Special Education and am so glad to be back at Fontana for a third year! I started here under my maiden name of Ms. G and love seeing my previous students grow. My favorite colors are pink and sparkles but I love doing messy sensory projects too. I love working with 3 - 5 year olds because the world is still a happy and magical place in their eyes and every day is a new adventure. I have a dog and cat at home along with lots and lots of books! If you would like to contact me directly my extension is 218 and my email is agaulke@fontana.k12.wi.us.

Ms. Thompson:  I am looking forward to my second year as a paraprofessional at Fontana Elementary School. I have had the opportunity to meet most of our incoming students and know that we are going to have a wonderful year! I graduated with a degree in advertising from UW-Madison and substituted for many years exclusively for our school.  I have five children that have attended or are attending here at Fontana. I have a passion for our school and also discovered last year a passion for crafts and bulletin boards. Please feel free to visit our classroom often to see what we are creating next!

I love working with Mrs. Nelson and can’t wait to share my days with your children. Can’t wait to see you all soon!

Academics: We track your child's academic growth two ways in 4K. The first is through the PALS assessment which looks at letter recognition, letter sounds and early literacy skills up to three times a year (fall, winter if needed, and spring). PALS has end of the year goals we help your child work towards throughout the school year. You receive a copy of your child's PALS scores about two weeks after they finish each round of PALS assessment. We also track their counting, shape recognition, number recognition and school readiness skills through Educlimber. This data can be shared at parent-teacher conferences when we meet to talk about your child's overall progress.

Social and Emotional: We focus on learning to work with everyone (sharing and talking through our problems), using our words instead of our actions and how to identify and talk about our emotions. We also work on developing friendships and making wise choices. Through explorative play children learn about right and wrong, safe and unsafe, nice and not nice.
