Standards Based Grading Tweaks for 2016-17 School Year

posted Sep 14, 2016, 1:13 PM by Sara Norton

We asked; you spoke; we listened; we tweaked! We have made several changes to our system of standards based grading that we hope will speak to several of the concerns that were identified through our surveys, parent meetings, and discussions. For specifics, please find a letter sent home the week of September 12 (USPS). We also have a copy on our "Recent Notes Home" page. The changes are also outlined in the first video in our new "Falcon Focus in Under 5" video series coming to our website soon.

2016-17 Registration August 2, 2016

posted Jul 28, 2016, 7:07 AM by Sara Norton

School is just around the bend! Set aside those flip-flops and beach toys for a few minutes on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, to register your child(ren) for the 2016-17 school year. Registration will take place in the gym from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and again from 3:00-6:30 p.m. Please note that the building will be closed from 1-3 p.m. School pictures will be taken at registration as well so bring your child(ren) in for their school pictures. All forms are available for download under the "Registration Materials" tab on the left side of the main webpage, for pick-up in the office, and also at registration. The forms may take some time to read and complete so we will have tables for those who need to fill the forms out at registration. See you there!

Save the Date! May 24 is Standards Based Education Night

posted May 13, 2016, 11:38 AM by Sara Norton

Please join us for a night of learning about best practices in grading systems. Help us brainstorm how we can best meet the needs of teachers, students, and parents/guardians as we report academic achievement and performance. We will be meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, in the library or the gym, depending on the response to our invitation. Look for a note coming home today in backpacks. We will also have the information under "recent notes home" on the website. Call Dr. Norton or Mrs. Smithyman with questions.

The school board meeting originally scheduled for March 28 has been moved to Monday, April 4. We'd love to see you there!

Join us for our Title program needs assessment.

posted Feb 22, 2016, 1:01 PM by Sara Norton

Please join us for our Title program needs assessment presentation at tonight's school board meeting. We'll be reviewing a brief history of the federal Title program, taking a look at who we are, how we have changed, how we are doing (especially for our students from diverse backgrounds), and what we plan to do with the Title funding moving forward in light of that information. The school board meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Fontana School Library. Hope to see you there!

Middle School News

posted Feb 22, 2016, 12:56 PM by Sara Norton

Our middle school will be getting its very own webpage! We've been working on pulling together all of the information that our middle school families might find helpful--in one place. Our newest page will include explanations of wheel classes and electives, a rotation schedule for the wheel and electives, a sample middle school student schedule, important middle school-only dates, and more! We are aiming to have the new page live by the middle of this week, but stay tuned for an update on when our new page will go "live."

Also, we have opened the Student Access portion of Skyward for our middle school students (grades 6-8). Students have received their login information and have practiced going online to see their gradebooks. Even as we encourage students to take ownership of their education, though, we encourage you to continue to support them by keeping an eye on the gradebook as well.

Finally, we would like to hear about other student information systems (we use Skyward) with which you may be familiar. Other districts may use systems like InfiniteCampus or Powerschool. We would like to hear what folks from other districts have experienced with different systems and ask that you shoot us a quick email if you have news about other systems--either good or bad! Contact Mrs. Smithyman, Director of Instruction and Student Learning, or Dr. Norton with any information you may have.

Declaration of Candidacy papers can be obtained through Fontana Jt 8 Business Manager Mary Coss.

School Board Vacancy Update

posted Oct 20, 2015, 12:51 PM by Sara Norton

Fontana Jt 8 School Board member Brandon Marvin resigned his Village of Fontana seat on the board due to a job relocation. Per board policy, requests for candidates for the open seat were published in the Lake Geneva Regional News as well as in a letter home to our families. The closing date for candidates to express their interest in the position was October 8, 2015.  The district received letters of interest from Paul Clausius and Mac Corey. Originally, the board planned to hold a special meeting on October 12 to select and appoint a candidate; however, not all members of the board were available that evening. Instead, the board will deliberate the decision and take action to appoint the selected candidate at the regular board meeting held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, in the school library. The regular meeting will be followed by the Annual Meeting at 8:00.
